NPR, AP among winners of Headliner Awards
March 25, 2011TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — National Public Radio and The Associated Press have won top honors in the 77th annual National Headliner Awards.
The Las Vegas Sun newspaper and CBS5-TV in San Francisco also were among winners of the four "Best in Show" awards in the national journalism contest run by The Press Club of Atlantic City, N.J.
NPR won the radio award for its "Confidential Informants" piece by Carrie Kahn, Philip Bruce and Marisa Penaloza. AP photographer Ramon Espinosa won for his work covering the Haiti earthquake.
The Sun won for its "Do No Harm: Hospital Care in Las Vegas" project reported by Marshall Allen, Alex Richards and other staff. The TV station won for "Vietnam Revisited" by Thuy Vu, Vince Garrido and Greg Marasso.
The Headliner Awards, first handed out in 1934, are one of journalism's oldest competitions. Each of the "Best in Show" awards announced this week comes with a $1,500 prize.
In the print division, judges cited the Las Vegas Sun for its series that revealed how patients are infected or injured while hospitalized in the city. The stories — which represented more than two years of reporting — were based on a review of 2.9 million patient-billing records that had been turned over by hospitals to the state for analysis but which had gone unexamined until the Sun obtained them.
Espinosa won for his detailed work in covering the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake and its immediate aftermath. He also has documented the nation's ongoing recovery from the quake.
In the broadcast division, NPR was cited for an in-depth look at confidential informants and how they operate in a mostly secret, largely unregulated world. Its work focused on a Mexican informant who infiltrated a top drug cartel in the border city of Juarez.
KPIX won for its story in which Vu returned to her homeland of Vietnam to take an in-depth look at the impact of Agent Orange.
