Alabama AP Managing Editors Association Contest
CONTEST RULES
Entries:
Entries must be the original work of a staff member of the AP member newspaper entering the contest. The work must have been published by the member newspaper or submitted to the AP for distribution during the calendar year for which the contest is conducted.
Classes:
Entries will be judged in four circulation classes:
I.Newspapers with a circulation of more than 40,000.
II.Newspapers with a circulation of 15,000 to 40,000.
III.Newspapers with a circulation of less than 15,000.
IV.Newspaper with a circulation of less than 5,000.
The newspaper's daily circulation as recorded in the most recent annual ABC report will determine the class a newspaper's entries compete in. If the newspaper is not a member of ABC, the most recent publisher's statement will be used.
Contest fees:
Newspapers should submit entry fees to the Alabama APME with their entries. If that deadline cannot be met, alternate arrangements may be made by contacting the association's treasurer, but in no event will entries be eligible for prizes if entry fees have not been paid before the contest results are announced.
Contest fees will be based on circulation size and will include a base fee plus a per-entry fee as follows:
Circulation class I -- $175 base fee, plus $6 per entry submitted.
Circulation class II-- $125 base fee, plus $4 per entry submitted.
Circulation class III-- $100 base fee, plus $2 per entry submitted.
Circulation class IV-- $75 base fee, plus $1 per entry submitted.
The base fee must be paid once by each newspaper. Payment of the base fee makes the newspaper eligible to compete in all areas of the contest – newswriting, sportswriting, makeup, photography, community service and freedom of information. The per-entry fee must be paid for each entry in any area of the contest.
For example, if a newspaper in Class II submitted as many entries as allowed in each area of competition, it would pay:
$125 (base fee)
$48 ($4 for each of 12 entries in the newswriting contest)
$40 ($4 for each of 10 entries in sportswriting)
$40 ($4 for each of 10 entries in makeup)
$72 ($4 for each of 18 entries in photography)
$ 4 ($4 for one entry in community service)
$ 4 ($4 for one entry in freedom of information)
$333 (total)
