AP California Members:

Here is an AP analysis of California's first-ever ranking of California public schools by test scores.

The state Department of Education is providing raw school-by-school data on its Web site.

The AP has ranked the schools by performance as a service to member newspapers and broadcasters who want to see how schools in their coverage area stand.

The first set of rankings is sorted by county and school district. The second is a straight top-to-bottom list, statewide.

Not included in our analysis or the state Education Department's list are the Capistrano School District, Lompoc School District, San Benito School District, the Magnolia and Carlsbad schools and the Rod Kelly and Las Animas elementary schools in Gilroy. The Education Department says data for those schools was faulty and must be resubmitted.
