IWASA, MAASAKI — Iwasa, former Regional Communications Manager based in Tokyo, died of cancer on April 17, 2004. He was 79.

Iwasa joined the Traffic Department of the Tokyo bureau in 1953. He was named Chief of Communications in 1973 and Regional Communications Manager in 1987, before retiring from the Associated Press in 1989.

Many Tokyo bureau staffers and retirees attended his funeral services, which were held on April 19 and 20.

He was survived by wife Toku, son Akihiro Iwasa, daughter Izumi Ochiai, and two grandchildren.
