ULVESTAM, ROLF — Ulvestam, Stockholm chief of bureau from 1960 to 1986, died on his birthday Jan. 14, 2004 at his home in Stockholm. He was 80.

Ulvestam joined the AP in 1952 after studying English in London for a year. He was named news editor in Stockholm in 1957, before assuming the job of bureau chief three years later. As bureau chief, he was primarily responsible for running AP's former Swedish-language service.

Here is what the 1966-67 winter edition of "AP World" had to say about Ulvestam: "A former rock blaster and lumberjack, Ulvestam was an adult when he emerged from the forests to seek higher education. He gained his first news experience as a newspaper stringer while studying at the Institute of Social Sciences in Stockholm. At 25, he got his first job as a newsman."

Ulvestam, who near the end of his life suffered from Alzheimer's, was buried during a private ceremony on Jan. 27. He is survived by his adult children Måns, Anna and Sophie, as well as several grandchildren.
