Spot News Jim Greenhill and Shane Benjamin, The Durango Herald, "Fire Reaches Vallecito". Comment: "What put this story over the top was the lead. 'On the ninth day, the birds died.' Jim Greenhill and Shane Benjamin, The Durango Herald, "Residents Flee Fire". No comments. John Lemons, Canon City Daily Record, "Standoff Ends in Gunfire".
Business Danie Harrelson, Steamboat Today, "Local Housing Factors". Comment: "Did an excellent job of putting a face on the story by talking to local people." Christine Metz, Steamboat Today, "A Shortage of Nurses". No comments. Tom Sluis, The Durango Herald, "Car Dealers Sought to Hide Payments".
Education Melanie Brubaker Mazur, The Durango Herald, "Down But Not Out". Comment: "A good look at the positives and negatives of an ultra-small school." Josh Nichols, Craig Daily Press, "Director Says Buses are Designed for Safety". No comment. Josh Nichols, Craig Daily Press, "Students Upset by Board's Decision."
Environmental Brian Newsome, The Durango Herald, "More Bears Dropping By for Dinner". Comment: "The terrific lead paragraph on this story is only the beginning - literally - of an article that vividly illustrates the collusion between man and wild animals. Congratulations to a nice balance of sources and variety of voices. Nice photos and info box, too." Jane Reuter, Summit Daily News, "Water Vigilantes". Comment: "Good sources and good art. The story was informative and did a fine job of detailing the strong feelings associated with the water issue." Doug Crowl, Steamboat Today, "Home Sweet Hole". Comment: "A nice package that again demonstrates comprehensive planning and execution. Praise for the lead, headline and use of the art."
Feature Ryan Sheridan, Craig Daily Press, "For Those Who Didn't Come Home". Comment: "A very readable package with nice photos and graphics (even though there were some typography glitches)." Jim Greenhill, The Durango Herald, "Needing a Miracle". Comment: "This package packed a punch. A terminally ill child is wrenching subject, and the writer handled it well. There was background, a good report on the individuals, and a sense of actually being there. Attractive design and great art, especially the photo with the dog, helped set this apart." Elaine Hale Jones, Montrose Daily Press, "Archaeologist Digs Local History". Comment: "Yes, the headline is a painful pun, but that makes it fun, and I'm glad they were willing to take a chance with it. Several folks who saw the headline also started reading the article, and followed the jump to more good art and an informative story."
Series Staff, Summit Daily News, "English as a Second Language". Comment: "A deserving winner. A lot of effort went into this and it paid off for your readers. Special praise for the diversity photo illustration on Page 2." Staff, The Durango Herald, "Faces of Fire". Comment: "The 'big guys' could learn from this newspaper. The series was compelling and well illustrated. We may kidnap your press crew." Staff, Montrose Daily Press, "Drought of the Century". Comment: "Several newspapers have done 'the water story', but this is a commendable result."
Special Section Staff, Canon City Daily Record, "Iron Mountain: Reflection on a Firestorm". Comment: "Wow. This is work to be proud of and worthy of the top honor. This project shows that the newspaper's daily coverage was solid as well. Putting it together in a special section provides readers with an excellent product to remember a disaster." Staff, Steamboat Today, "The Great Divide: Housing in Steamboat Springs". Comment: "Good journalism is a matter of fundamentals. If you do them right, it's easier for the rest to fall into place. This special report reflects good reporting, writing and presentation. Added bonuses include involving the community and readers." Staff, Steamboat Today, "Locals". Comment: "Readable features from the newspaper in an attractive presentation. Must be nice to have so many upscale retail ad clients."
News Col - 3 Consecutive - John Peel, The Durango Herald. Comment: "Two things about Peel's columns stand out - the fine writing and a range of subject matter. His entries run the gamut from war to development to a lost horse. His words have a power that all columnists want - the power to evoke a response, an emotion. Good work." David Staats, The Durango Herald. Comment: "Staats puts the readers at the scene by painting a picture for them. Readers can almost hear firefighters talking or see a room full of worried evacuees. He also uses strong writing techniques to wrap up his piece. Solid journalism." Tom Sluis, The Durango Herald. Comment: "Where does this newspaper get all these folks? This unique column is funny. I'm sure it's a hit with readers. Keep it up, and tell me where I can find it online."
Sports John Russell, Steamboat Today - "Cowboy Up - Life on the Road". Comments: "Fantastic article, from start to finish. Granted, I've never been much of a rodeo buff, but this article grabbed my attention and kept it until it was completed." Jason Starr, Summit Daily News, "The Byrne Factor".
Sports Col Dale Strode, The Durango Herald - "Ultimate Team Players Define Today's Hero's". Comment: "The kind of column I enjoy to read. Great way to analyze those competing in the game of life, and I had to just keep going back to it constantly and soaking up what I can out of it." John F. Russell, Steamboat Today - "Junior Olympics About More Than Winning."
Editorials Staff, Steamboat Today. Comment: "The writing conveyed strong stances without beating readers over the head with a know-it-all mindset. Fine writing style, too." Staff, The Durango Herald. Comment: "Writers addressed difficult issues head on without flinching. That's what editorials should do."

BEST OF SHOW PHOTO Matt Inden, Rocky Mountain News, "Crash of Air Tanker".
Comment: "One of a series of images that shows the crash of an air tanker falling apart and crashing while fighting the Big Elk fire near Estes Park. This was one of the most spectacular images we saw and we all wondered why is wasn't entered in the Spot News category as well."
Graphics Keith Alewine, The Durango Herald, "Moving a Road". Comment: "Keith Alewine's map of the proposed 211 road changes provides a clear, easy-to-read overview of the situation. A finely crafted graphic that looks very sophisticated." Greg Johnson, Montrose Daily Press, "Growth Through the Decades". Comment: "An ambitious timeline that chronicles the growth of a county."
Web Site Staff, The Durango Herald. Comment: "Straightforward navigation, clean design. Interesting elements include the police blotter (with a "Best of" collection from previous years), a weekly poll and a Relocation Package for new residents. Helpful touches include the subscription form and the obituaries navigation, with an index of names serving as internal links to individual notices and occasionally even external links within those notices to other papers' obituaries." Staff, Steamboat Today. Comment: "Well-designed with a classy look and strong organization. Good community elements in "The Record" (police blotter), Real Estate section and Calendars. Not yet taking full advantage of online forms, with subscription page as a print-and-fax operation instead of on online form."
Joe McGowan Staff, The Durango Herald. Comment: "The Herald has both a small-town and big-city feel to it. There's plenty of reporting on local happenings. But also plenty of news hole for international, national and regional events. Particular note is made of legislative coverage. Photography is strong, and the writing is generally lively. The big story in the West at the time - Salt Lake Olympics - is thoroughly covered. Strong outdoors coverage is lagniappe." Staff, Montrose Daily Press. Comment: "Especially good photography and design. Spunky editorial pages."
    Public Service

TIE: Judges awarded winners to each newspaper size:

LARGE: Staff, The Gazette, "Feeling Insecure". Comment: "I think letting readers know "a few hand grenades" were undetected at the airport is a huge public service. At the time, airport security was at the front of everyone's mind. When a breech like that reaches close to home, people need to know. The Gazette did an excellent job informing the public and helping to bring about positive change."

MEDIUM: Staff, The Daily Times-Call, "School Theft". Comment: Exposure, change and letting tax payers know what is happening with their money - newspaper work at its best. On top of that, the use of editorials was impelling, the stories were interesting and thorough and I really liked some of the headlines."

SMALL: Staff, The Durango Herald, "Missionary Ridge Fire". Comment: "What thorough work! After reading all the coverage, I feel competent to ace an exam on the fires and their aftermath. You kept the public informed and up-to-date. That's what public service is all about."
