FAPB Announces Winners in Annual College Broadcast Competition 2004

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Some of Florida's best college broadcast journalists were honored Saturday, April 24, during the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters' annual college competition and awards luncheon.

Students from the University of Miami, the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida, the University of South Florida, Florida A&M University, Florida Gulf Coast University and Flagler College competed in this year's contest. The winners were announced at Universal Orlando's Portofino Bay Hotel.

The top award for Best Television Newscast went to Stephen Webster of the University of Miami, while colleague Lena Fernandez was honored for Best Spot News.

Feature awards for college TV went to UCF's Anne Deason, Farnaz Jarid and Carlos Torres of U-F, and U-M's Webster. Miami's Jason Kennedy won Best Sports.

In the college radio division, Ileana Ramos of FAM-U won the top award for Best Newscast of five minutes or less. For Best Newscast over five minutes, the top award went to WRUF-AM at the University of Florida. Awards for Best Long Light Feature and Best Sports also went to WRUF.

The FAPB awards have been held annually for Florida's professional broadcasters for more than 35 years. The broadcasters group, which represents Florida broadcasters who are members of the AP, introduced the college competition three years ago to encourage and honor students who are planning careers in TV or radio journalism.
