| The
Minnesota AP and its newspaper governing board, the Minnesota AP
Association, ask Minnesota newspaper members to help measure the
quality of the state report by participating in MAPA's annual Wire
Watch, held this year on March 11, 12 and 13. The form for the Wire
Watch is below. Be as specific as possible in your remarks so that
responses may guide our future efforts. Because roughly 40 percent
of the state AP report comes from members, the Wire Watch will include
a check of newspapers those days for stories and photos that were
not offered to AP.
You may send your completed forms to MAPA President Anne Jacobson by regular mail: Anne Jacobson News Editor Red Wing Republican-Eagle P.O. Box 82 Red Wing, MN 55066 You may also fax forms to Anne at (651) 388-8912, or e-mail them to her at annej@republican-eagle.com. PLEASE COMPLETE AND SEND THE FORMS BY TUESDAY, MARCH 18. Delays in participating make it more difficult to recall the news of the day, and your impressions of that day's AP report. We suggest you devote a few minutes March 12, 13 and 14 to evaluating the previous day's effort, but use whatever method works best for your newspaper. If you have questions about the form, direct them to Anne at 651-388-8235. The results will be reported to members no later than the annual MAPA banquet, Friday, May 2, at the Riverfront Radisson Hotel in St. Paul. 2003 Wire Watch March 11-13 Name of Newspaper: Wire Watch participants: General instructions for each day of the watch: Print out a copy of AP's STATE news digest for whichever cycle (morning or evening) your paper uses. Remember to find and print any advisories of late-breaking stories. Highlight every story you used, whether it was used as transmitted or incorporated into your own newspaper's reporting. Remember to include stories that were on the state wire but not on the digest. Next to each story, write the number of the page where it appeared in your paper. Answer these questions and attach the form to your copy of the state news digest: 1. Was today's report timely? Did AP cover breaking news fast enough, to your knowledge? 2. Were there state stories you would have liked to have seen in the AP file of stories that day? That is, stories you may have been aware of from other newspapers, radio or television that you thought AP should have had? 3. How do you assess the quality of writing, reporting and editing in today's report? Be specific with examples good and bad. 4. How useful was today's AP photo report? Be specific. 5. Did you send your news digest to AP? If not, why not? 6. Did you send any story to AP? If not, why not? 7. Did you send any photo to AP? If not, why not? 8. Did you talk with anyone from the Minneapolis or St. Paul bureaus today? Were they helpful? |
