2007-2008 GRAPHICS COMPETITION
COMPETITION CRITERIA:
ELIGIBILITY: Graphics artists, editors, illustrators,
photographers and photo editors for AP member daily newspapers published in
FEES: $5.00 per entry. Make check payable to Associated
Press Associations.
DEADLINE:
Postmark by Monday, June 16, 2008.
AWARDS: Winners will
be notified by wire advisories. Awards will be presented at the annual banquet Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at The Century House in
ENTRIES: Based on two classes of newspapers’ daily
circulation: over 50,000; and under 50,000.
Each
class consists of six categories: (See
reverse for definitions.)

news
- informational graphic,
non-spot news
- news presentation, spot
- news presentation, non-spot

Each
entrant may submit up to six entries, dividing them as desired
among the categories.
Enter
graphics and illustrations as actual tear sheets. Do not send original artwork.
Staple
the enclosed entry forms to the back of each tear sheet. Information on these
forms MUST BE LEGIBLE.

CATEGORIES:
GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATION
A visual element used to enhance a story. Usually sets
the tone and is interpretive. The goal of an illustration should be to draw the
reader into the piece. This category would include the merging of photographs
with illustrations or line art, and computer-enhanced or -edited photos.
INFORMATIONAL GRAPHIC, SPOT NEWS
Should try to explain the news visually. Uses charts,
maps, tables, diagrams and other devices that help to explain a complex
subject. These may or may not be run with photographic or illustrated elements.
Spot info graphics are done on breaking news stories where time is very
limited, and are usually published in the next edition after the event.
INFORMATIONAL GRAPHIC, NON-SPOT NEWS
Should try to explain the news visually. Uses charts,
maps, tables, diagrams and other devices that help to explain a complex
subject. These may or may not be run with photographic or illustrated elements.
Long-term info graphics are often done as in-depth looks at long-running stories,
or where there is a lot of lead time.
NEWS PRESENTATION, SPOT
Packaging and layout of coverage of a single news
event on deadline, including photos, graphics, headlines and stories. Entry
should consist of entire tear sheet page.
NEWS PRESENTATION, NON-SPOT
Packaging and layout of coverage of a single story or
series of stories or a special section.
INTERACTIVE GRAPHICS
Visual
elements posted to a news Web site that include interactive graphics, quizzes,
graphic slideshows, graphic videos, interactive maps, screen casts, and other
multimedia graphics.
