the Photojournalism/Design Scholarship

The New England Associated Press News Executives Association offers two $1,000 scholarships to be awarded at the organization's spring conference, Tuesday, May 20, 2003.

One scholarship will be awarded to a journalism/reporting student and one will be awarded to a newspaper design/graphics/photojournalism student.

The first award, the George Esper Reporting Scholarship, is named after a long-time Associated Press special correspondent who retired in 2000 after 42 years of service. During his distinguished career, Esper covered the Vietnam War and several other major world events ø always showing the human side of the story, always maintaining personal and professional integrity. This award will be given to a student who seeks to emulate Esper's efforts.

The second award, the Photojournalism/Design Scholarship, will be presented to a photojournalism/newspaper design/graphics candidate whose work shows creativity, innovation and clarity of thought.

Successful reporting and design candidates must:

  • Be enrolled as full-time undergraduate or graduate student studying journalism, photojournalism, newspaper graphic design or a related field.

  • Have some experience working at a school or community newspaper or newspaper Web site.

  • Be a New England resident studying at a school in another region of the country or a resident of another region studying at a school in New England.

    Interested students should submit the following materials:

  • An Application

  • A letter of nomination from a college official or instructor detailing the student's accomplishments and commitment to journalism.

  • A 500-word essay about the contributions the student hopes to make in journalism.

  • A resume.

  • Samples of the student's work including newspaper or Web stories, photos or designs, classroom assignments or other supporting material. Each candidate ø reporting or design ø should submit five to 10 examples of their work.
