Wayne Carter
Eagle Times, Claremont, N.H.

Firefighter Bryan Burr stretches out on the Sugar River ice to pull Cutis Shattuck from the frigid water after he fell through Jan. 1. Rescuers got to the 11-year-old quickly, which was fortunate, because doctors said he would not have survived more than five minutes in the water.

Honorable Mentions

Bob Hammerstrom
The Telegraph of Nashua, N.H.
Hudson, N.H., firefighters hoist Colton Rice, 4, from an abandoned well he fell into while playing Jan. 24. The youngster was unharmed. Property owners said they did not even know the well was there.

How I got the picture

Carter:

"It was New Year's Day and most folks were watching parades on TV or getting ready to see bowl games and some were nursing hangovers from New Year's Eve. I had just returned from Gloucester, Mass., and was trying to dream up a New Year's photo for that evening's paper.

"Suddenly the police scanner sent out an all emergency services (police, fire and ambulance) to a 911 call at the Sugar River, near Sugar River Mills, a housing project in downtown Claremont.

"I drove to the scene, which is about a mile from my house. I took my Nikon with the 80 to 400 mm lens to the edge of the river bank and observed the child up to his neck in the water. The boy had shards of ice all around his neck and a policeman was trying to keep him calm while two firefighters crawled out on the ice in their survival suits. They rescued the child just before he went under.

"The boy was taken, by ambulance, to the local hospital."
