Charitable "Penguins" run into Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vt., on Feb. 15. The plunge in sub-zero temperatures by about 650 people raised nearly $200,000 for the Special Olympics.

Chawla:

"I remember that it was about 10 degrees BELOW zero that day. I had every piece of cold weather gear I owned, and I was still cold.

"The water would begin to freeze between groups of "Penguin Plungers," it was that cold. I was the only fool lying down on the ice, but that was the only way to make the shot. If the water hadn't frozen so fast, I would have been soaked.

"Over 650 people raised $250,000 for Special Olympics that day."
