How I got the picture

Patriquin:

"I was heading back to the Portland office from a Gorham assignment through Westbrook when I noticed the fire chief's car racing through town with lights and siren on. I followed him to a small neighborhood to see a small house fully engulfed.

"I discovered that a man was inside with a possible weapon and told to keep back. After the firemen determined he was down in the kitchen they pulled him out the front door.

"I was shooting with a NIkon F-5 and my trusty 80-200 mm zoom. He was transported to the hospital and later released."

About the others

Honorable mentions went to Thomas Rettig of the Journal Tribune of Biddeford, Maine, for an April 26 shot of a workman framed through the tines of a rake, and to Raj Chawla of the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press for his April 21 picture of a relieved mother embracing her daughter after she and other students were released following an unspecified threat at the Edmunds Elementary and Middle Schools in Burlington.
