Two bald eagles fighting over territory lie entangled in a brook leading to the Androscoggin river in Auburn, Maine, on April 27. When a wildlife officer tried to separate the birds, they released one another and eventually flew away.

An otter surfaces through the pond ice with a fish in Bartlett, N.H. The April 2 sighting was the first of the otter in the small pond, which was still covered with up to an inch of ice in some parts.

A firefighter hoses down a section of a house belonging to state Sen. Hull Maynard in Shrewsbury, Vt., on April 25. The flames were kept away from the oldest section of the home, which dates back to 1795. No one was hurt in the fire. |
