Chris Weed, a member of Lincoln Search and Rescue, pulls Walter Bell from the frigid water after Bell's canoe overturned April 17 during the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race in Bangor. Bell was one of several competitors who had to be rescued when their canoes flipped.

A firefighter works inside a burning house in Grafton, Vt., on April 21. The wind-whipped flames destroyed the house. The occupants were not at home at the time, and neighbors were able to assist pets who escaped unharmed.
