Smoke lies like fog on the ground as a firefighter searches for hot spots during a May 14 struggle in Bucksport to contain a brush fire. Gusty winds fanned what had been a grass fire into a blaze that for a time threatened several nearby homes.

How I got the picture

Katz:

"Fellow photographer Bob DeLong and I were covering the Bucksport fire. I arrived on the scene as more or less back-up. Bob had already covered the event fully so I was looking for a slightly different approach.

"I waited several hours and once things began to die down a bit, I skirted into the woods in hopes of making a more ethereal image of the firefighters lurking through the smoke in search of hotspots.

"My patience, and an understanding photo-editor, Scott Haskell, paid off, and after wondering through the woods for nearly an hour I made what I felt were some compelling images of the aftermath of the blaze."
