How I got the picture

Jacobus:

"I got the call from our city editor, Jeff Merritt, that a bank had been robbed by a man who fled on a bicycle. I received updates as I headed towards the bank on Main Street from Jeff, since Nashua police are on a digital system that can't be received on a standard scanner.

"When I was halfway there, Jeff called to say that the police thought they had the suspect in front of the SNH Medical Center on Main Street. Thinking I was only likely to get a photo of police securing the scene, I was pleasantly surprised to see the suspect still there, with his hands on the hood of a police cruiser.

"I pulled off the road quickly, crossed the busy Main Street with traffic slowing to stare at the spectacle of a shirtless suspected bank robber pleading his case to police. At first, he tried to look away from the camera, but he was so riled up trying to talk his way out of trouble, he soon forgot about me.

"I had almost fifteen minutes to photograph the situation, since police didn't arrest him until they had a positive ID from two witnesses that they drove by the scene in unmarked cruisers. The uniformed police officer in the photo approached the reporter and I after a few minutes and suggested we wait at the police station for them to give us a press release, apparently hoping we'd be foolish enough to leave such a spectacle and take their account later. I politely declined, of course!"
