Henske:

"The photo and situation leading up to this photo were a surprise. In Brattleboro, on the Sunday the photo was taken, it was a reasonably sunny day with a few very minor showers throughout the day. I got the call in the early afternoon that Grafton was experiencing flooding, so I took a drive (Grafton is approximately 30 minutes from Brattleboro.)
"I expected to reach Grafton and find a broken beaver dam, perhaps, and a small amount of flooding. As I approached Grafton I noticed fast-moving streams, but few other indicators of large amounts of damage.
"Upon entering the center of Grafton I was immediately shown that I had underestimated the damage. Debris, rocks and mud were flowing through the center of the town. I noticed a fire engine and went to the area the photo was taken. I was shooting a road with a section the length of the road and six feet deep missing, shot this and was walking further up the road when I looked over and saw the roof and hood of a Subaru.
"The road had washed into the yard of the house, and also into the living room of the house. The owner was surveying the damage to the car while her daughter and a friend were attempting to dig a path into the house (all doors were blocked by the mud.)
"During the course of the day I photographed a river lapping at the clapboards of a house, a house carried off its foundation by waters, and other roads and highways that were destroyed by the powerful water."
