Stephen M. Katz
Bangor (Maine) Daily News

The van in which 14 migrant workers died is pulled from the Allagash Wilderness Waterway on Sept. 12. Only one of the forestry workers survived when the van plunged off the side of a narrow wooden bridge into 15 feet of water. The picture was one of three exclusives the BDN offered on cycle from the remote site.

How I got the picture

Katz:

"I was on my way to a spot news assignment a couple hours north of Bangor on the morning of Sept. 12 when I got the call about the accident in which 14 of 15 migrant workers died while on their way to work. A reporter and photographer hopped a plane from Bangor and I headed up there for additional support.

"The location of the accident was extremely remote and I traveled quite a ways on dirt timber roads. It was a hurry up and wait situation. All the local media outlets were there focused on the activity across the bridge. When rescue workers began lifting the van out of the water I broke from the pack and positioned myself atop the cab of a logging truck that was waiting for the scene to be cleared to cross the bridge. The spot afforded me just enough height to get a clear vantage point to shoot from.

"Making deadline was the tricky part. I drove the reporter and photographer, who'd flown to the site, back to Bangor. And I'm glad I had the companionship as my truck blew a tire while returning on timber roads that had recently been graded. Photographer Jerry Swope is NASCAR material when it comes to changing a tire.

"That said, in truth, the whole day was an extraordinary team effort. With special thanks going to the folks back at the paper who helped see the process through - Photo Editor Scott Haskell and Assignment Editor Jeff Strout were invaluable.

"Since Sept. 12, my thoughts and prayers are often times with the families who suffered these terrible losses."
