Jim Berke of Windham hunts for urchins off the coast of York on Sept. 23. Urchins once covered the ocean floor but over harvesting has made them scarce. Maine has reduced the urchin season to ten days from Kittery to Rockland in an effort to rebuild the population.

Huoppi:

"I shot this on an afternoon when I knew we needed a nice feature for one of our section fronts. This was a location that I had been keeping in the back of my mind knowing it would make a nice feature pretty much any day.

"I knew Pine Street was a place where I was likely to catch pedestrians and bicycle commuters during the afternoon. It was just a matter of waiting there for about 30 minutes and shooting from a couple of different spots to get a composition I liked.

"After the cyclist rode past I had to hop back in the car and guess which side street he went down so I could get his name."
