Durham police use pepper spray to control crowds following the Red Sox loss to the New York Yankees on Oct. 17. Police arrested seven people from the crowd of about 2,500 that surged into downtown after the game.

The Times Argus, Barre, Vt.
Carroll Witham of East Montpelier, Vt., uses a wheelbarrow to move stacked wood on Oct. 18. Witham cuts and splits about seven cords of wood to heat his home each winter.
