Rich Beauchesne:

"I was sent to photograph a Red Bull Surf contest in Rye, N.H., on the day following a Nor'easter with heavy rains and unsusally high tides. Despite a strong, cold off-shore breeze, the waves were about perfect in terms of New England surfing.

"I bundled-up and put on my favorite feature lens, the Sigma 50-500mm! The surfers were pretty far out there so I shot primarily at 500mm on my Nikon D1X. Early morning light combined with two surfers added the extra dimesion to make this picture.

" I shot around 150 frames before I was too cold and figured I had something decent. The picture stood out among all the other tighter frames with only one surfer in them. I knew it was front page, but I was to delighted to see it won November's AP contest!"
