Officers exchanged fire in top photo with Rodney Williams, then warily approach him as he lies wounded on a sidewalk in downtown Ellsworth on Dec. 23. Police said Williams was being taken to court when he overpowered a deputy and took his handgun. The two photos are part of an on-cycle sequence provided by the Bangor Daily News.

Rescue workers at the top of a slope look down on a tanker truck that went off state Route 2 in East Montpelier on Dec. 20. The truck spilled fuel oil, and the driver was trapped in the cab for over an hour before he was removed and taken to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

Robert Donahue of Merrimack, Mass., is the center of attention as he feeds the seagulls on Hampton Beach Dec. 22. Donahue's feedings are a ritual repeated daily for the past 12 years.
