Brian
Carovillano named AP news editor for Northern California
SAN FRANCISCO -- Brian Carovillano, day supervisor for The
Associated Press in Boston, has been promoted to news editor
for Northern California.
The appointment was announced Jan. 23 by John Raess, chief
of bureau for Northern California, northern Nevada and Hawaii.
Carovillano joined the AP in Providence, R.I., in 2001. He
served as lead reporter for the federal corruption trial of
longtime Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci and was involved
in coverage of the West Warwick, R.I., nightclub fire that
killed 100 people.
He transferred to Boston in 2003. As day supervisor, he helped
oversee the AP's coverage of the first legal gay marriages
in America, the 2004 Democratic National Convention and the
Boston Red Sox's historic World Series win.
Carovillano is a native of Westfield, N.J., and a graduate
of Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
He succeeds Michael Warren, who was named deputy Latin America
editor for English services.
