Brian Carovillano named AP news editor for Northern California

SAN FRANCISCO -- Brian Carovillano, day supervisor for The Associated Press in Boston, has been promoted to news editor for Northern California.

The appointment was announced Jan. 23 by John Raess, chief of bureau for Northern California, northern Nevada and Hawaii.

Carovillano joined the AP in Providence, R.I., in 2001. He served as lead reporter for the federal corruption trial of longtime Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci and was involved in coverage of the West Warwick, R.I., nightclub fire that killed 100 people.

He transferred to Boston in 2003. As day supervisor, he helped oversee the AP's coverage of the first legal gay marriages in America, the 2004 Democratic National Convention and the Boston Red Sox's historic World Series win.

Carovillano is a native of Westfield, N.J., and a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

He succeeds Michael Warren, who was named deputy Latin America editor for English services.
