AP Press Release

Alan Clendenning appointed Associated Press bureau chief in Sao Paulo, Brazil

NEW YORK -- Alan Clendenning, a Brazil-based business writer for The Associated Press, has been named AP's chief of bureau in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He will direct news coverage in South America's largest nation, where AP has three offices, the AP's Latin America editor, Niko Price, announced May 29 in Mexico City. Clendenning will succeed Harold Olmos, who retired in December.

Clendenning joined the AP in 1998 in New Orleans. He transferred to AP's business desk in New York, where he covered mergers and acquisitions, and was posted in 2002 to Sao Paulo.

"I'm thrilled with the chance to oversee strong team coverage of a fascinating nation that's becoming more and more important on the world stage," Clendenning said.

In Brazil, Clendenning has covered both business and general news from the industrialized south to the Amazon rainforest, including Brazil's worsening gang violence, its rise as an agricultural superpower and alternative energy supplier, and the two terms of its first working-class president.

"Alan understands the nexus between politics, economics and social change in Brazil. He will be a terrific leader in coverage of this emerging 21st century giant," said John Daniszewski, the AP's international editor in New York.

Born in Bethesda, Maryland, and raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, Clendenning graduated with a journalism degree from Emerson College in Boston. He is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish.

Before joining AP, Clendenning wrote for the Portland (Maine) Press Herald and the Keene (New Hampshire) Sentinel.
