Curran named Montpelier, Vt., correspondent for The Associated
Press
MONTPELIER, Vt. -- John Curran, correspondent
for The Associated Press in Atlantic City, N.J., for the past
12 years, has been promoted to correspondent for the news
cooperative in Montpelier.
Curran will be responsible for directing the AP's news coverage
in Vermont, overseeing a staff of four reporters and a photographer.
The appointment was announced June 23 by Northern New England
Chief of Bureau Larry Laughlin.
Curran began his career with the AP in Charleston, W.Va.,
in 1989 and transferred to Boston in 1993.
In 1994, he was named correspondent in Atlantic City, where
he has covered crime, politics, the Miss America pageant,
Donald Trump's casinos and sports. He has won numerous awards
for his feature, sports and profile writing, including a first-place
award in 2000 from the Society of Professional Journalists'
New Jersey chapter.
A U.S. Army veteran, Curran got his start in journalism writing
for U.S. Army newspapers. He worked for the Niagara Gazette
in Niagara Falls, N.Y., before joining the AP.
Curran was born in New York City and grew up in Buffalo, N.Y.
He is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y.
He succeeds Chris Graff, who is no longer with the company.
