Paul Haven, AP news editor for Pakistan
and Afghanistan, promoted to bureau chief
NEW YORK -- Paul Haven, news editor for The Associated Press
in Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been promoted to chief of
bureau for the AP in those countries.
The appointment was announced June 28 by Deborah Seward, AP's
international editor.
Haven will continue to be based in Islamabad, Pakistan, where
he has worked since 2002.
He joined the AP in Bogota, Colombia, in 1994 and transferred
to the International Desk in 1998. After the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks, he headed an investigative team that coordinated
overseas terrorism coverage.
In 1997, he was part of the team that won an Associated Press
Managing Editors award for deadline writing for coverage of
the commando raid that ended a four-month hostage crisis at
the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima, Peru.
Haven is a graduate of Cornell University and a native of
New York City.
