Warren, Luis Alonso named deputy Latin America editors for
The Associated Press
MEXICO CITY -- Michael Warren, news editor for Northern California
for The Associated Press, and Luis Alonso, director of AP's
Spanish Online service, have been named to the new positions
of deputy Latin America editors.
The appointments
were announced Sept. 30 by Niko Price, AP's Latin America
editor.
The two will help direct AP's new Latin America Desk in Mexico
City to coordinate AP's editorial operations across Latin
America and the Caribbean. Similar desks in Bangkok and London
oversee coverage in Asia, Europe and Africa.
Warren, deputy Latin America editor for English Services,
started his news career in AP's Indianapolis bureau in 1988,
then became a reporter and supervisor in Miami. He worked
on the AP's national editing desk in New York for four years
before moving to ABCNews.com, where he helped manage the Web
site's launch.
Warren, of Indianapolis, rejoined the AP in 1998 as supervisor
in San Francisco, and became news editor for Northern California
in 2000.
He is a graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned
a bachelor's degree in English and a master's in journalism.
Alonso, deputy Latin America editor for Spanish Services,
has supervised AP's first Spanish-language multimedia editorial
team since 2001. He previously supervised StarMedia Network's
Spanish-language content, as well as worked as a political
reporter and as New York and Madrid correspondent for Diario
El Nacional in Caracas, Venezuela.
Alonso, of Caracas, holds a bachelor's degree in journalism
from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and a master's degree
in journalism from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid.
