editor/South
NEW YORK -- Dave Martin, an Associated Press photographer
in Alabama who has covered major news and sports events worldwide
in two decades with the news service, has been named the AP's
regional picture editor for the South.
The appointment was announced Oct. 29 by Deputy Director of
Photography
J. David Ake.
Martin was a photographer with The Ledger in Lakeland, Fla.,
before joining the AP in 1983 as staff photographer for Alabama,
based in Montgomery. His photo assignments beyond Alabama
have included coverage of the Gulf War in 1991 and the Afghanistan
war in 2001 as well as sports events such as the Olympics
in Greece.
He won a National Headliner Award in 1999 for a photo of Key
West, Fla.,
residents battling hurricane winds.
In his new post, he will have responsibilities overseeing
the AP's photo report across the South region.
"It's a wonderful opportunity to work closely with an
extremely gifted and talented Associated Press photo staff
that makes up the South," Martin said.
