AP- Chairman's Prize:
Live video news feed service wins AP's first Chairman's Prize

NEW YORK -- The team that created a live video news feed service called APTN Direct has been named winner of The Chairman's Prize, a new Associated Press staff award for innovation. The 13-member team was awarded $10,000 by the judges of the four finalist entries.

The program was created this year by AP President and CEO Tom Curley and Burl Osborne, chairman of the AP board of directors, as a vehicle for the staff to foster creative thinking, performance breakthroughs and entrepreneurial changes that affect the AP or the news industry.

Osborne announced the winner and the cash prize at an AP Staff Recognition Awards dinner Nov. 18 at New York headquarters attended by the board of directors, including several former chairmen, current and past AP executives, the finalists and team representatives.

"APTN Direct has revolutionized the way key subscribers use video from TV news agencies," Osborne said. "It has harnessed Web technology to allow a constant dialogue with customers. It has increased revenue, and it offers a key differentiation with APTN's competitors."

Sandy MacIntyre, director of news at London-based APTN, accepted the award from Osborne as the representative for his finalist team. He said the honor was particularly timely because APTN observed its 10th anniversary this month. MacIntyre praised the board of directors and AP leadership for approving the 2003 creation of APTN Direct as a
dedicated, multi-location live video news feed.

The other finalists for The Chairman's Prize, which was open to both individuals and teams nominated by their colleagues, were awarded $5,000 apiece. They were:

-- a team in Washington, D.C., and London that substantially enhanced
AP's Electronic News Production System (ENPS) in 2004;

-- a U.S. team that developed a comprehensive package of services for
members and customers for the 2004 elections in America;

-- AP Deputy Managing Editor Tom Kent, credited with the design of AP's
multimedia-integrated newsroom at the new headquarters.
