Federman appointed AP's news editor in Jerusalem
NEW YORK -- Josef Federman, an Associated
Press correspondent in Jerusalem, has been appointed Jerusalem
news editor, responsible for directing daily news coverage
out of Israel and the Palestinian territories.
The appointment was announced Dec. 11 by International Editor
John Daniszewski.
Federman replaces Karin Laub, who has been appointed as chief
Ramallah correspondent.
The appointment is effective immediately and he reports to
Jerusalem bureau chief Steven Gutkin.
Federman, a native of Westborough, Mass., joined the AP in
New York in 1993 before transferring to Charleston, W.Va.,
the following year. He joined the AP's International Desk
in New York in 1995 as an editor and supervisor.
In 2000, Federman became an editor at the Wall Street Journal
and two years later was promoted to deputy technology editor
at the Journal's Web site. He returned to the AP in 2003,
joining the Jerusalem bureau, where he has helped cover many
top stories including the death of Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon's
debilitating stroke, the Gaza withdrawal, Hamas' rise to power
and last summer's war against Hezbollah.
Federman graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from
Clark University with a bachelor's degree in government. He
earned a master's degree in international affairs from the
Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs.
He also completed a year of graduate studies at the Hebrew
