The Associated Press names four new senior vice presidents

NEW YORK -- The Associated Press on Wednesday named four executives as senior vice presidents with overall responsibility for news, human resources, services and technology, and newspaper and new media markets.

In announcing the appointments, Tom Curley, president and chief executive officer, said the changes better reflect the growing challenges and responsibilities of the AP in today's news and market environment.

New AP senior vice presidents are Tom Brettingen, director of Newspaper and New Media Markets; Kathleen Carroll, executive editor; Jim Donna, director of Human Resources; and John Reid, director of Services and Technology.

Brettingen recently took on the role of leading AP's Newspaper and New Media Markets department, which he will serve as senior vice president. Brettingen has more than 30 years experience as a newsman, editor and executive. He was named a vice president in 2002 and previously was director of business development.

Brettingen joined the AP in 1970 in Sioux Falls, S.D., and was Minneapolis news editor before being appointed deputy sports editor in 1976. He was chief of AP's Miami bureau and was a general executive in AP's Newspaper Membership department. He also served seven years as vice president of business information services for ARI Network Services Inc., a Milwaukee-based electronic commerce company. He is a journalism graduate of the University of Minnesota.

Carroll, senior vice president for News, was named executive editor in 2002. She joined the AP in Dallas in 1978, was named news editor in Newark in 1981 and later moved to Los Angeles, where she was city editor and assistant bureau chief. She also was news editor in the AP's Washington bureau, specializing in domestic policy coverage.

Carroll has more than 28 years of experience as a journalist, having also worked as a reporter for The Dallas Morning News, a business editor at the International Herald Tribune in Paris, an editor at the San Jose Mercury News and chief of the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau responsible for Washington and overseas coverage. She attended the University of Texas-Arlington and Dallas Baptist University.

Donna, senior vice president for Human Resources, has been vice president and corporate secretary to the board of directors since 1992. He has been director of Human Resources since 1994, overseeing AP hiring, training, labor relations, affirmative action, employee benefits and other personnel matters.

Donna joined the AP in Philadelphia in 1973, served on AP's General Desk and spent two years as enterprise editor. He was appointed New York City chief of bureau in 1979 and from 1983 to 1988 was director of AP Wide World Photos, before being named assistant to the president.

He is a graduate of Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md., and holds a master's degree in journalism from Penn State.

Reid, senior vice president for Services and Technology, has been a vice president since 1988 and director of communications since 1987. He is responsible for technology and technical services.

Reid joined the AP in 1974 in Portland, Maine, and was correspondent in Montpelier, Vt., and chief of bureau in Charleston, W. Va., and Hartford, Conn. In 1984, he was appointed senior deputy director of AP Broadcast Services in Washington, D.C., and was named director two years later. Before joining AP, Reid worked at radio stations WJOY-WQCR in Burlington, Vt., and as a reporter for the Concord (N.H.) Monitor.

Other senior vice presidents are John Keitt, general counsel with responsibilities for global business development, and Jonathan P. Wolman, assigned to special projects.
