Developers of AP Exchange win 2007 Chairman's Prize for innovation
NEW YORK (AP) -- A team of five AP employees has been awarded
The Associated Press' 2007 Chairman's Prize for their work
in creating a Web-based service that organizes and delivers
news from AP to its member news organizations.
The winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony at AP's
headquarters in New York on Oct. 24, the news cooperative
announced Thursday.
The company introduced AP Exchange in September of last year,
and within nine months it was being used in at least 85 percent
of the newsrooms of its members, AP said in a statement.
AP Exchange is a Web-based, password-protected service that
allows newspapers to search and organize AP news stories,
photos, graphics and video. It also can be used to search
and access news from newspapers across the United States.
The prize was shared by Dwayne Desaulniers, deputy director,
U.S. Newspaper Markets; Cynthia Blair, senior project manager,
Technology; Ava Tang, deputy director of product data, Information
Management, Technology; Pramod Anchuparayil, software architect,
Technology; and Linda Dorrian, director of Web applications,
Technology.
The prize carries monetary awards that the judges determine
to be commensurate with the importance of the innovation.
The amounts for this year's prize will be announced at the
awards ceremony, AP spokesman Jack Stokes said.
AP created the award in 2004 to encourage innovation among
its staff. Last year a team that created an online video network
for the AP shared the Chairman's Prize and received $1,000
each.
The prize is named after the chairman of the AP, MediaNews
Group Inc. CEO William Dean Singleton, as well as past chairs
Frank Batten, Frank Daniels, William Keating, Donald Newhouse
and Burl Osborne, who selected the winner from recommendations
by a committee of AP managers.
Founded in 1846, The Associated Press is the world's oldest
and largest newsgathering organization, providing news to
more than 15,000 outlets with a daily reach of 1 billion people.
It is a cooperative owned by its members.
