AP broadcasting executive Kathman named head of sports products

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jim Kathman, a broadcasting executive at The Associated Press, was named Tuesday to a newly created post overseeing the business side of AP's sports news operations.

As global director of sports products, Kathman will be responsible for the budget and profitability of AP's sports news business as well as expanding its products across various media formats.

Kathman will also manage AP's relations with sports leagues as well as providers of sports programming and data. He will report to Tom Brettingen, senior vice president of global newspaper markets at AP.

After joining the AP in 2001, Kathman, who is 40, worked on several broadcasting projects for the news cooperative, including an online video news network that is operated as a partnership with Microsoft Corp.

Kathman, who is based in Washington D.C., where AP's video operations are headquartered, had been director of product management for global broadcast and director of marketing and strategy for AP Broadcast.
