Matt Moore named AP's Berlin bureau chief in charge of Germany and Poland

NEW YORK (AP) -- Matt Moore, AP's business writer in Frankfurt, has been promoted to chief of bureau for Germany and Poland.

The appointment was announced on Thursday by John Daniszewski, managing editor for international news.

Based in Berlin, Moore will be responsible for coverage of Germany and Poland. He will also oversee AP's German service, which provides domestic coverage and translates AP's international report for scores of media outlets in Germany.

He replaces David McHugh, who transferred to London as European business editor.

"The Associated Press has a long history in reporting the story of Germany and Poland. Its staffers are seasoned professionals who know the delicate context and details that make not only for an engaging story but an edifying one," Moore said. "I'm confident that we will keep AP the world's prime source of news and analysis from Germany and Poland."

Moore, 37, joined the AP in Mississippi in 1999 as a reporter and business writer before transferring to AP's business desk in New York as a night supervisor.

In 2002 he became news editor for the Nordics and Baltics, based in Stockholm. In that position he was a main architect of AP's strong coverage of the Nobel Prizes.

Three years later he moved to Frankfurt, where he was business writer for Germany and central Europe. He has been highly successful in leading coverage of the emergence of a strong European Central Bank and euro, and the rebounding of one of the world's largest economies.

During his career with AP, Moore has reported from Europe, Africa and the Middle East, including Iraq. He has covered major stories including the meltdown of U.S. communications giant WorldCom, the 2005 London bombings, the murder of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh and the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Moore graduated from Auburn University in Alabama in 1993 with a degree in journalism.
Before joining AP, he worked for various publications in the southern United States, including The Dothan Eagle in Alabama, The News Herald in Panama City, Fla., and Florida Trend magazine.
