NPPA names AP's David
Guttenfelder as 'Best Photojournalist' in competition
NEW YORK -- The National Press Photographers Association
has named New Delhi-based David Guttenfelder of The Associated
Press "Photojournalist of the Year" in its 2006
Best of Photojournalism competition.
NPPA's still image photography judges honored Guttenfelder
in the category for large markets. Josh Melzer of the Roanoke
Times was named photojournalist of the year in the category
for small markets.
"This is a fitting recognition of David's excellent photographic
work for the AP over the last year," said AP Director
of Photography Santiago Lyon. "He has produced a quality
and textured series of images, with his compelling news, feature
and sports photos from around Asia continuing to help make
AP the essential global news agency. David is an excellent,
well-rounded professional and a first-rate team player and
I heartily congratulate him on this award."
The 2006 contest marked the fifth year of the contest for
the photojournalism organization. NPPA says it was the largest
competition to date with more than 55,000 images submitted.
Guttenfelder, based in India as chief Asia photographer, was
cited for four NPPA awards. AP's photo coverage captured a
total of 10 prizes. Here's the complete list of AP honorees:
