Press inaugurates Latin America photo editing operation
MEXICO CITY (AP)
-- The Associated Press on Friday inaugurated a Latin America
photo desk to coordinate and edit photo coverage from across
Latin America and the Caribbean.
Led by Regional Photo Editor Enric Marti, the desk has begun
sending images directly from Mexico City to the world. Similar
photo desks exist in Tokyo, London, New York and Washington,
overseeing AP photographic coverage in those regions.
The opening is part of AP's move toward a more regionalized
structure globally. The news cooperative once managed all
its international bureaus directly from New York. It now has
established major regional centers in London, responsible
for coverage in Europe and Africa; in Bangkok, responsible
for Asian news coverage; and in Mexico City, responsible for
Latin America and the Caribbean.
The bilingual regional desk for Latin America also includes
AP print editors in Spanish and English and Associated Press
Television News editors. They oversee journalists in approximately
21 offices covering more than 45 countries and territories
in Latin America and the Caribbean.
"The opening of the regional photo desk demonstrates
AP's continuing commitment to quality photo coverage from
Latin America and the Caribbean in close coordination with
our colleagues in text and television," said AP Director
of Photography Santiago Lyon. "It will further enhance
the AP's ability to deliver an integrated bilingual news report
in the region."
