The AP establishes the first leased wires dedicated exclusively to the transmission of news. They run from New York to Washington and carry 20,000 words a day. 

The plaque, presented by Sigma Delta Chi, Professional Journalistc Society in 1967, is displayed in the lobby of AP's New York headquarters. It reads: "Historic Site in Journalism. The Associated Press established the world's first private leased wire for news transmission in 1875, the forerunner of today's mass communications networks. This plaque marks New York City as the northern terminus of the wire which extended to Philadelpha, Baltimore and Washington."
