| The AP establishes the first leased wires dedicated exclusively
to the transmission of news. They run from New York to Washington
and carry 20,000 words a day.
The plaque, presented by Sigma Delta Chi, Professional Journalistc
Society in 1967, is displayed in the lobby of AP's New York headquarters.
It reads: "Historic Site in Journalism. The Associated Press established the world's first private leased
wire for news transmission in 1875, the forerunner of today's
mass communications networks. This plaque marks New York City
as the northern terminus of the wire which extended to Philadelpha,
Baltimore and Washington." |
