Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association
CONTEST WINNERS AP announces 2007 broadcast news contest award winners
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Roy Shapiro, former vice president and
general manager of KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia, is the
2008 winner of the Roy E. Morgan Award for Outstanding
Contribution to Broadcasting. Three radio stations and two television stations were honored with the Joe Snyder Award for Outstanding News Service in their market classifications: KYW, Philadelphia; WSBA, York; WKOK, Sunbury; KYW-TV, Philadelphia; and WGAL-TV, Lancaster. KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia won the Sandy Starobin Award for Enterprise/Individual Reporting by major market stations in 2007. The station was cited for its entry, "The Delaware Valley on the Front Lines," by reporter Michelle Durham. The AP staff also cited eight Pennsylvania stations for outstanding membership cooperation in covering the news for The AP in 2007: KYW, Philadelphia; KYW-TV, Philadelphia; the Radio Pennsylvania Network, Harrisburg; WFMZ-TV, Allentown; WGAL-TV, Lancaster; WGRC, Lewisburg; WJPA, Washington, Pa.; and WNEP-TV, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The contest entries were judged by the Illinois AP Broadcasters Association. In some cases, awards were not made because (1) there were not enough entries in a particular category, (2) the judges felt that entries did not fit the criteria specified in the entry rules, and/or (3) that there was such a wide gap in quality between those that did win and the other entries in the category no additional award(s) could be given. The Associated Press is not involved in judging of the awards and assumes no responsibility for the judges' choices. The judges' results are final.
