AP announces formation of the Mobile News Network

The Mobile News Network – powered by the Associated Press – is a new multimedia service that offers access to local and national news from trusted sources for wireless users, wherever they are and whenever they need it. Designed specifically for market-leading smartphones, the Network provides a rich media gateway to local news content, supplemented by AP’s text, photos and video. Local news is branded and supplied by members participating in the Digital Cooperative.

The Mobile News Network has received excellent feedback, including praise from Media Post’s Mobile Insider Steve Smith, who says: “AP is doing some of the best iPhone development I have seen. Two mobile news sites - the general AP Mobile News Network and Election ‘08 — make deft use of the Safari-specific attributes of the browser. The slide shows are magnificent, with captions that pop up as overlays, so you can get a larger image and a longer caption with real informational depth. This is technology serving the interests of content. The Elections ‘08 interface, which has evolved in the site’s first few weeks, is a model of concision. The tabs drop you into stories, photo galleries, videos from the campaign trail, recent quotes and a handy statistic. Again, the interface serves both the purpose of mobile content, quick access, and an editorial mission.”

Additionally, the Mobile News Network was recently selected as the featured iPhone site on the Just Another iPhone Blog, highlighting the Network’s easy navigation and its extensive coverage of local, national and international news, election news, photos and videos. The blog also praises the Network’s customization features, especially the ability for users to enter multiple locations by zip code and receive local news, photos, weather updates and much more for locations the user has selected.
