A message from the bureau chief:

The new generation of consumers has different news consumption habits. They rely on search engines for news and exchange information with "friends" in social networking sites.  To reach these consumers, news should be easy to find on the Web, and members should have wide distribution opportunities for their content.  This means that content can't be simply confined to a Web page; it needs to be self-contained, portable and monetizable.

AP is taking an early step to help with a service called Content Enrichment, at no cost to you.  In fact, you will receive a discount of up to 5% on your 2009 basic assessment if you sign up by April 15, 2008.

AP Content Enrichment conditions your content so that it can be better found by search engines, and can enable content management systems to make more efficient use of them.  The process involves adding descriptive information to news content such as text stories, photos, videos or graphics.  This information is called metadata, and describes the news category (e.g., a sports crime story from Georgia) and the famous people or places mentioned (e.g., athlete).

AP first built its metadata and taxonomy for AP content so that it's more easily searchable and better organized.  Following many precedents, AP is making these developments available to you and other members.  Broad adoption by members will open the door for more digital cooperative opportunities to sell and distribute content that can bring more revenue to the members – and to AP

With AP Metadata, you can experience benefits for your own content:

Ø Link to related stories within your own site
Ø Improve results from search engines
Ø Link to other member's stories
Ø Organize content for other opportunities

I’d like to invite you to sign up for free access to AP Content Enrichment, and I'd be happy to speak with to you in further detail or point you to the right resources who can help get you started.  Feel free to contact me at 919-510-8937, or spwilson@ap.org

Best,                                                                                        Sue
