ABOUT AP SOUTH
DAKOTA
-
When
people read the newspaper, they might think that the AP
is entirely a print operation. But a good portion of AP
staffers' jobs involves writing broadcast stories for
television and radio stations as well as producing
fast-breaking updates and multi-media packages for the
Web.
-
How does
the "news cooperative" work? The AP receives news
contributions from member newspapers and broadcast stations,
in addition to the stories produced by AP staffers
themselves. AP members often give AP the first word of
breaking news so quick updates can be filed for Web sites
and to the wires that serve broadcasters and newspapers. At
the same time AP staffers are working their beats, whether
in the statehouse or the courthouse, and filing updates to
all state members.
-
The AP
has six full-time news people in its Sioux Falls and Pierre
bureaus.
-
The AP
has 240 bureaus worldwide, including 145 in the United
States. It has 3,500 employees.
-
The AP
reaches 8,500 newspaper, radio and television subscribers in
112 countries overseas, and 1,700 newspapers and 5,000 radio
and television stations in the U.S. With such a reach, it's
easy to understand why stories that break in South Dakota
often end up in newspapers and on Web sites throughout the
world.
-
Stories
used to be transmitted via telegraph, but current AP
technology is leaps and bounds ahead of early systems. With
the click of a mouse, AP employees can transmit stories
throughout the world via satellite and the Internet.
