SCHEDULE | PHOTOS | SOUTHERN LINKS | ENTERPRISE | STATES From the Delta swamps to the Carolina Piedmont and the Appalachian Mountains, the South is a diverse, dynamic region with a strong identity and many shared interests. The AP's South Wire, launched in September 2000, taps into that common bond by organizing the 12 Southern states into a cooperative-within-a-cooperative that makes it easier to share stories, track trends and take a truly regional look at issues. Southern bureaus identify and develop stories with a regional flavor, on such issues as growth, the environment, education, agriculture and the ever-changing face of the South. But stories don't have to have regional ramifications to be good South Wire candidates. Good readers will also be found. The South Wire offers spot news digests Monday through Friday and an enterprise digest that features advances for weekend and Monday release. Every AP member in the South receives the regional wire. The wire includes AP staff-written stories as well as newspaper member exchanges that carry a newspaper credit and byline. South Wire stories move under q* numbers. All carry BC-SOU- in the slug. Southern regional news editor James Martinez directs the South Wire from Raleigh, N.C.
