2011 Photo of the Month/Year Awards
Each month in 2011 the AP selected a photo of the month for the best member-submitted news photo shared in cycle.

All photos shot by staff photographers or reporters of AP member newspapers in Mississippi and shared during the same publication cycle in which they were shot were eligible.

Photo of the Year


The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Year for 2011 is Stephen Lance Dennee of The Paducah Sun. His photograph shows the buggy of an Amish family that was caught in a flash flood seen in a field along Roscoe Creek, Feb. 25, in Hickman County near Dublin. Four children died as the family sought to ford a rain-swollen creek in the horse-drawn buggy.

Clay Jackson of The Advocate-Messenger in Danville for winning the AP Kentucky Photo of the Month for September 2011.   Jackson’s image shows an American flag on Main Street in Danville, Ky., reflected in raindrops as seen through a windshield of a car on Sept. 6.

The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Month for August 2011 is Terry Prather of The Ledger Independent of Maysville  for his photo of Hannah Shields carrying a pig into the ring for the 'greased pig' contest at the Germantown Fair.

The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Month for July 2011 is Clay Jackson of The Advocate Messenger of Stanford  for his photo of Kynnlee League, 2, having fun with her boer goat, Gabe, before competition during the Open Goat Show at the Lincoln County Fair.

The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Month for May 2011 is Bill Luster of The Courier-Journal of Louisville for his photo of a damaged barn at historic Churchill Downs race track on Thursday, June 23, 2011.  A tornado Wednesday evening smased several horse barns at the track.

The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Month for May 2011 is James Mannof The Winchester Sun of Winchester, Ky. for his photo of Winchester Fire-EMS firefighter Chris Howard helping rescue Stephanie Woosley and her boyfriend Brandon Peacock from their smoke-filled second-floor apartment during a fire that damaged their apartment building Wednesday, May 14, 2011 in Winchester, Ky.

The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Month for April 2011 is Mike Lawrence of The Gleaner of Henderson, Ky. His photograph shows Leon Gentry looking out over flood waters from Canoe Creek that surround his garage on Alma Avenue, after he spent the morning of April 25 working to secure what he could from the rising water.

The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Month for March 2011 is Kyser Lough of the Ledger & Times of Murray, Ky. His photograph shows Ramon Esqueda, elephant trainer for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, giving Asian elephants Suzie, Minnie and Bunny a drink of water outside the CFSB Center.

The winner of the Kentucky AP's Photo of the Month for January 2011 is Terry Prather of The Ledger Independent of Maysville. His photograph shows Brandon Hutchison using a broom to clear snow from used cars on a lot in Maysville on Jan. 28, 2011.
Prather will receive $100 and his photo will be showcased on PhotoStream.
