2011 Photo of the Month/Year Awards

Each month in 2011 the AP selected a photo of the month for the best member-submitted news photo shared in cycle.

All photos shot by staff photographers or reporters of AP member newspapers in Mississippi and shared during the same publication cycle in which they were shot were eligible.

C. Todd Sherman of The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal is the winner of the AP Photo of the Year for his picture showing an unidentified emergency responder combing through the wreckage of a destroyed home after a tornado touched down in Smithville, Miss.

Bruce Newman of The Oxford Eagle is the winner of the AP Mississippi Photo of the Month for December 2011 for his photograph showing a pedestrian walking at the University of Mississippi as snow falls in Oxford Dec. 7.


November


John Fitzhugh of The Sun Herald is the winner of the AP Mississippi Photo of the Month for November 2011 for his photograph showing Shelva Border of Gulfport, daughter of Chief Petty Officer Raymond Border, listen to the closing prayer during a ceremony at Bel Aire Elementary School in Gulfport on Nov. 11 honoring CPO Border who was killed in Afghanistan last month. Border was a member of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74 when he was killed by an improvised explosive device on Oct. 19.

Amanda McCoy of The Sun Herald of Biloxi is the winner of the AP Mississippi Photo of the Month for October 2011 for her photograph showing members of the Orange Grove Church of Christ gathering on a neighborhood lawn to comfort one another and family members of the deceased after a double homicide at the Kentwood subdivision in Gulfport.

John Fitzhugh of The Sun Herald of Biloxi is the winner of the AP Mississippi Photo of the Month for September 2011 for his photograph, taken Sep. 9, shows D'Iberville High School students Justin Brister, a football player, and Michaela Peterson sitting together at the locker of classmate Latrell Dunbar at the D'Iberville High School football field house the day after Dunbar died of what was listed as "an acute cardiac event," according to a coroner, during D'Iberville's football game against Gautier High School.

Barbara Gauntt of The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson is the winner of the Mississippi AP 2012 Photo of the Month for her August 13, 2011 photo of IRegiuna Spann, 3, of Jackson at the memorial forming after a candlelight vigil for Dominique Henderson, 28, and her four children who died in a fire early Saturday at Lakeview Manor Apartments.

Amanda McCoy of the Sun Herald is the winner of the Mississippi AP 2012 Photo of the Month for her July 2011 photo of Sean Mosley, 10, as he flies into a large pool of water that collected at the edge of Park Row Avenue in Long Beach, on July 18. A section of the street was barracaded due to flood water from heavy rain that inundated Harrison County.

Jerel Harris of the Enterprise-Journal is the winner of the Mississippi AP 2012 Photo of the Month for his June 2011 photo of James Pittman, Jr., 4, cooling off inside the water park at the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Mississippi as temperatures soared in McComb on June 7.

John Fitzhugh of the Sun Herald is the winner of the Mississippi AP 2012 Photo of the Month for his May 2011 photo of Cheyenne McVay, 3, of Gulfport, enjoying the music of Neon Trees during the inaugural Gulfport Music Festival in Downtown Gulfport.

Rick Guy of The Clarion-Ledger is the winner of the March AP Photo of the Month contest for his picture showing a goat sticking it's head over its pen at a small petting zoo set up by 16-year-old Northwest Rankin High School student Kayley Pennington at the state Capitol in Jackson, Miss.

Bruce Newman  of The Oxford Eagle is the February  2011 winner of The Associated Press Mississippi Photo of the Month contest for his picture of University of Mississippi students enjoying the snow as they sled on the university's  campus in Oxford, Miss.

Amanda McCoy of The Sun Herald of Biloxi, Miss. is the winner of the Mississippi AP 2011 Photo of the Month for her January photo of attorney Kenneth Feinberg, the administrator in charge of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, a BP's compensation fund for Gulf oil spill victims, gesturing as he addresses a town hall meeting in Bay St. Louis.
