Newspaper awards in writing, photo, graphics for 2013

Newspapers in Canandaigua, Poughkeepsie, Middletown and on Long Island were honored May 31 as Newspapers of Distinction by the New York State Associated Press Association.

Also announced at the NYSAPA Annual Meeting were winners of other top categories, including the Young Journalist of the Year.

The Daily Messenger of Canandaigua, Poughkeepsie Journal, Times Herald-Record of Middletown, and Newsday were judged the best newspapers in their respective circulation categories. The entire news product, print and digital, was judged in this competition.
The NYSAPA is one of the oldest and most competitive journalistic competitions for daily newspapers in the state. Out-of-state journalists are the judges.

The newspaper awards, moved up this year from fall to spring, recognize work done in the 2013 calendar year. The association is planning a daylong workshop on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Syracuse University.


Others honored by the NYSAPA are:
— MIKE HENDRICKS YOUNG JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARD
Jeff Stein of The Post-Standard in Syracuse won the award named for the former Associated Press news editor in Albany and given to a journalist with up to three years' experience.
— BERNARD J. KOLENBERG AWARD
Gabe Dickens of the Press-Republican in Plattsburgh won the Bernard J. Kolenberg Award for best in show for a photo of quick action during a men's soccer game. The award is named for an Albany Times-Union photographer killed in a plane crash in Vietnam while he was covering the war for The Associated Press.
— BRUCE CROMIE AWARD
Peter R. Barber of The Daily Gazette in Schenectady won the Bruce Cromie Award for contributing the best of the state AP's "Photo of the Month" award winners. He captured an image of Schenectady firefighters battling a three-alarm, Christmas Eve fire. The award is named for an Albany photographer killed in an auto accident while on assignment for a member newspaper.

Reporter Carolyn Thompson in the Buffalo bureau and reporter Jake Pearson in the New York City bureau were named AP Staffers of the Year.he New York State AP Association voted at its fall 2013 board meeting to move its annual awards banquet to the spring to coincide with the AP broadcast members' event.
