2011 Photo of the Month Awards

Each month in 2011 the AP selected a photo of the month for the best member-submitted news photo shared in cycle.

All photos shot by staff photographers or reporters of AP member newspapers in Mississippi and shared during the same publication cycle in which they were shot were eligible.

December


J. Miles Cary of the Knoxville News Sentinel is the winner of the December Tennessee member photo contribution of the month for his photo of Knox County Sheriff's Office Deputy Mike Devore arresting Kevin Maples for motor vehicle theft Dec. 5, 2011 in Knoxville, Tenn. According to authorities, Maples is expected to face 22 charges in connection with a scheme in which vehicles were towed from the homes of victims and sold to a scrap yard for $400-$600.

Miles Cary of the News Sentinel is the winner of the November Tennessee member photo contribution of the month for his picture showing Bobby Snodderly, 77, of Jacksboro, Tenn., watching over his family's shopping bags at a mall in Knoxville, Tenn., on Black Friday, Nov. 25, 2011. Snodderly and his family began their Christmas shopping at midnight.

John Partipilo of The Tennessean is the winner of the October Tennessee member photo contribution of the month for the picture showing Tennessee State Troopers arresting Occupy Nashville protestors in the early morning hours on the Legislative Plaza in Nashville, Tenn. on Oct. 28, 2011.

Jenna Walker of the Chattanooga Times Free Press is the winner of the September Tennessee member photo contribution of the month for the picture showing Flash leaping over Lawrence Frederick's back to catch a disc during the 2011 Hyperflite Skyhoundz World Canine Disc Championship Saturday, in Chattanooga, Tenn.

George Walker IV of The Tennessean is the winner of the August Tennessee member photo contribution of the month for his picture of Tennessee Titans rookie wide receiver Joseph Hills being doused with water after being tied to a goal post following the final training camp practice Aug. 22, 2011 in Nashville, Tenn. Rookies regularly endure pranks on the final day of training camp.

Aaron Hardin of The Jackson Sun is the winner of the Photo of the Month for June 2011.  In a June 25, 2011 photo, Reed Mitchell, 10, cleans his father Troy Mitchell's headstone at the Mitchell home on June 25, 2011. Troy Mitchell was killed in 2009. An inmate, Ameale Hudson, was released from the Madison County jail on Oct. 8, 2009, into the community supervision program. Police said he bought the gun used to kill Troy Mitchell the next day.

Mike Brown of The Commercial Appeal is the winner of the Tennessee May member photo contribution of the month for his picture of cars submerged in floodwaters from the Wolf River in Memphis, Tenn. on May 10, 2011.

Aaron Hardin of The Jackson Sun is the winner of the Tennessee AP Photo of the Month for his picture of Mike Yates taking a break from flood recovery in his office at Counter Solutions in Jackson, Tenn. on April 29, 2011. Dozens of roads were closed because of downed trees and power lines, hundreds were homeless and tens of thousands were without power after the most devastating storm to hit the state since Feb. 5, 2008.

George Walker IV of The Tennessean is the winner of the January member photo contribution of the month for his photo of former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher waving as he leaves a news conference at the team's headquarters on Jan. 28, 2011, in Nashville, Tenn. The Titans announced the day before that Fisher will not remain as head coach.
