NASHVILLE, May 14, 2011 — WKRN-TV in Nashville and The Tennessean of Nashville were the big winners at the Tennessee broadcast and newspapers awards were announced Saturday before a crowd of more than 160 people at the Sheraton Nashville Downtown.
Both took home the most first-place awards in their respective divisions in the large market television and newspaper divisions for the Tennessee AP Broadcasters and the Tennessee AP Managing Editors organizations.
In the Tennessee APME awards, newspapers competed in four divisions based on circulation size, encompassing 14 categories of competition.
In Division I, representing the state's large-market newspapers, The Tennessean took top honors for Daily Deadline Reporting for "Overwhelmed (Flood of 2010)”; the Malcolm Law Award for Investigative Journalism for "The Gangs of Middle Tennessee"; Online Slideshow; Best Website; Sports Photography; Spot News Photography; and Individual Achievement in Photography.
In Division II, The Jackson Sun claimed top honors in Features Reporting; Business News; Editorials; Daily Deadline Reporting for "Submerged"; the Malcolm Law investigative award, Best Website; Feature Photography; Sports Photography; Photojournalism; and Individual Achievement in Photography,
The most Division III top awards were garnered by The Greeneville Sun, which won Sports-Outdoors Reporting; Daily Deadline Reporting for "Budget Committee Alters Procedures"; Multimedia; Website; Sports Photography; Spot News Photography; and Photojournalism.
Three newspapers shared the most honors in Division IV. The Daily News of Memphis took home Features Reporting; Business News; and Editorials. The Shelbyville Times-Gazette won Sports-Outdoors Reporting; Daily Deadline Reporting for "Inferno: Residents Escape"; and Online Slideshow. The Union City Daily Messenger received top awards for Sports Photography; Photojournalism; and Individual Achievement in Photography.
The Tennessean and WREG-TV in Memphis each were honored with the Freedom of Information award for their investigative work.
The Tennessee newspapers' work was judged by AP member newspapers in Oklahoma.
