The U.N. Security Council is planning an emergency meeting about Iran on Friday (1500ET/2000GMT), after the U.S. asked the world body to show support for Iran's anti-government protesters.

Iran's interior minister said up to 42,000 people took part in the week of protests and unrest sparked by economic woes. At least 21 people have been killed and hundreds arrested.
