The Associated Press today released the 55th edition of The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law, which includes more than 200 new or revised entries and a new chapter on digital security for journalists.
The AP Stylebook, 55th Edition, includes entries that are new as of today plus additions and changes made throughout the year on AP Stylebook Online, such as new and expanded guidance on gender-neutral language announced earlier this month.
New today are significant updates to the Stylebook’s technology terms: about 100 new or revised entries, including internet privacy, digital wallet/mobile wallet, smart devices and lidar.
The 55th edition of the Stylebook also includes a new Digital Security for Journalists chapter. The guidance helps journalists secure their devices, online accounts and reporting material to protect their work and sources and avoid online harassment.
Among the other changes in the new spiral-bound Stylebook:
- An expanded entry on sexual abuse, sexual assault, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct.
- A revised entry on climate change, global warming, climate crisis.
- Revised guidance on preheat, semi-automatic rifle, the + symbol and midnight.
- New entries on coronaviruses and education-related terms.
AP Stylebook Editor Paula Froke will answer questions about the new book today (May 27) at 2:30 p.m. EDT in a Twitter chat, using the hashtag #APStyleChat.
At more than 600 pages, the AP Stylebook is widely used as a writing and editing reference in newsrooms, classrooms and corporate offices worldwide. Updated regularly since its initial publication in 1953, the AP Stylebook is a must-have reference for writers, editors, students and professionals. It provides fundamental guidelines for spelling, language, punctuation, usage and journalistic style. It is the definitive resource for journalists.
The AP Stylebook is available in spiral-bound print and several digital formats.
Future print editions of the Stylebook will be published biennially. The shift to printing a Stylebook every other year comes as more users subscribe to AP Stylebook Online, which is updated continually throughout the year with new and revised entries.
AP Stylebook Online includes all Stylebook listings, plus an Ask the Editor feature with extensive archives, a pronunciation guide with phonetic spellings and audio pronouncers, and Topical Guides about news events. Users can add their own entries, make notes and receive notifications throughout the year when AP’s editors add or update listings.
AP Stylebook & Webster’s New World Online adds 185,000 definitions from Stylebook’s primary dictionary to Stylebook Online’s subscription website. A single search delivers results from both and clearly identifies the source of each entry.
The new Stylebook print edition costs $21.50 for AP member news organizations and college bookstores and $26.95 retail. AP Stylebook Online prices are $27 for individual subscribers for one year, $22 for a single user at news organizations that are AP members. Prices for Stylebook Online site licenses are based on the number of users, starting at $210 for 10 users for a year.
